Pumpkins for the NHS
The coronavirus crisis has changed many aspects of our lives. This month one of the pressing questions for parents of young children is "should I let my children go trick or treating?".
You'd have thought this would be an easy question for the Conservative Government to answer. But interviewed this past week all Tory Minister Nadhim Zahawi would say is "hands, face, space" (good advice) and "use your common sense". So yes or no Minister? Is it a good idea for children to be going from house to house?
Well we hate to spoil children's fun, but we are prepared to say, please, in the interest of controlling the spread of COVID-19 don't let your children go trick or treating.
We still want your children to have fun, and we'll show you below how you and they can make a 'We Love the NHS' pumpkin-head. It's a great way to enjoy Halloween with your children AND show support for the NHS. But please, have some ghoulish fun in-doors, don't let your children go door-to-door.
A word of caution - making the pumpkin-head involves knives, skewers and scissors so please, parents do the pumpkin carving NOT young children.
| Step 1 - Download the templates we've provided here and here then print them out. |

Step 2 - Get your pumpkin, sharp knife, skewer, sellotape, felt tip pen and scissors. Step 3 - Cut out the template and attach to the pumpkin with sellotape. | |
| Step 4 - Use a skewer to poke small holes through the template and trace out the letters and symbols. | |
Step 5 - Remove the template. Step 6 - Use a felt tip pen to join up the holes, transferring the stencil onto the pumpkin. | |
| Step 7 - Using a narrow and sharp knife carefully cut along the stencil lines. Cut at a slight angle and gently prise out the pumpkin skin. | |
Step 8 - Cut the top off the pumpkin and keep it as a cap. Step 9 - Carefully scoop out the centre of the pumpkin - put the pulp and seeds in the composting or recycling bin.... Or make pumpkin soup? | |
Step 10 - Now carefully with the sharp knife extend your cuts through to the centre of the pumpkins and gently push out the flesh leaving a hole. Step 11 - Put a tea light into the pumpkin, light it and replace the pumpkin top. | |
| Step 12 - Place in a window or on the steps of your home to show your support for the NHS. |
Another word of caution - the tea candle is a naked flame please be careful where you put the pumpkin and keep an eye on it.
