“We Will Oppose Regional Pay!” Adrian Sanders MP Tells Central Devon Liberal Democrats

November 23, 2012 10:05 AM

Newton St Cyres played host to Central Devon Liberal Democrats AGM this year with guest speaker Torbay MP Adrian Sanders.

In a thought-provoking speech the Torbay MP listed the achievements of Liberal Democrats in Government while being open about the challenges that lay ahead.

"We have helped to raise the income tax threshold that has brought 2 million of the lowest earners out of income tax altogether and given 21 million people a tax cut of over £500.

"We have introduced the Pupil premium giving schools an extra £600 to each child that qualifies for free school milk.

"And we have restored the link between pensions and earnings meaning a pensioner will now receive on average an extra £15,000 over the course of their retirement.

"Locally we have won a rebate for South West Water customers, secured investment in broadband so that Devon will be ahead of the game, and infrastructure investment to assist areas like Torbay."

Mr Sanders warned that the party faced a difficult task getting this message across to the voters but where we maintain contact with the electorate through hard local work we can and still do win elections.

Parliamentary Spokesperson Phil Hutty asked if the Parliamentary Party would be opposing Tory policy to introduce regional pay in the public sector. Mr Sanders was able to reassure members that he and his Parliamentary colleagues across Devon & Cornwall and beyond were totally opposed to regional pay.

The Torbay MP ended on a humorous note, following a question from the floor. Asked if he would like to join Nadine Dorries in the celebrity jungle, he explained his bewilderment at her unwise decision, adding that the Westminster jungle was quite daunting enough without going to the other side of the world for a pretend one.

The meeting was closed with thanks to Mr Sanders by the outgoing Constituency Chairman John Nutley.
