Devon's schools are stockpiling nearly £21 million of public funds given for education, figures from Devon County Council reveal.

An investigation is being demanded by County Lib Dem leader, Cllr Alan Connett, into why so much money is being held in reserves by schools.

"There's some homework to be done to justify why so much money is being held back for schools by the county council, especially at a time when we face severe cuts," said Cllr Connett.

"Devon is one of the lowest funded councils in the country for education, so every single penny really does matter. The Conservative run county council needs to get to the bottom of this because otherwise it could damage the all-Party campaign to win better funding for our schools," he added.

I am sure that, like myself and many others, you are incredibly disappointed by the national result which saw us reduced to just 8 MPs. After going into coalition we always knew this election was going to be difficult, but no-one predicted that the result was going to be quite so devastating.

Locally we fared much better and managed to buck the national trend. On Mid Devon District Council we increased from three to five councillors. Nick Way and John Downes were returned with big majorities in Boniface Ward (Crediton) and Bob Wright and Frank Letch won comfortably in a tight and hotly contested fight, in Lawrence Ward (Crediton). Luke Taylor, after just missing out in both 2007 and 2011, had a fantastic win in Bradninch amassing a majority of 250. On Teignbridge District Council our Chairman John Nutley also got elected, where he topped the poll in a three member ward.

Lib Dem campaigners in Teignbridge are finding overwhelming support for their campaign against the Tory Garden Tax.

The council plans to charge residents £35 a year to take away their garden waste, grass and hedge clippings, in the green wheelie bin. And while Teignbridge expects a cash bonanza of around £650,000 from the tax next year, its recycling rates are falling and more waste is being sent to landfill, the council's own figures show.
