Lib Dem Candidate Welcomes Post Office Card Account Decision

9.41.54am GMT Wed 3rd Dec 2008

Central Devon Liberal Democrat Sally Morgan has warmly welcomed the news that the Post Office will continue to run the card account which is currently used by 4.3 million people across the country.

There were fears that the Government had decided to award the business to PayPoint which would have meant the likely closure of a further 2,000 - 4,000 post offices.

Cllr Morgan who campaigned locally for the Post Office to retain the card account, said she was delighted at the news. "The Post Office Card Account earns the Post Office £200 million a year," she said "and had the contract gone elsewhere, then thousands of post offices would have been faced with closure, many of which would have been in rural areas."

She stressed, "The Post Office Card Account should never have been put out to tender in the first place. This has been an unnecessary process which threatened the very future of the Post Office Network and put a great deal of pressure on post office workers and customers alike. The Government should now look towards protecting the network even further by giving it the opportunity to offer more services."
