Crediton Lib Dem Councillors Show Their Colours
Lib Democrat voters came out in force in Crediton to buck the national trend at the district council elections.
The party retained all four of the town's seats in last week's poll. Crediton Mayor Frank Letch, who stood as an independent candidate, came fourth in the Boniface ward.
Two councillors were elected to each of the town's Mid Devon District Council wards. Bob Wright, led the Lib Dem charge inLawrenceward , securing more votes than any other (639) candidate in the town He will represent the seat alongside former Queen Elizabeth's Community College teacher Martin Binks. Councillor Binks secured 582 votes, narrowly beating Conservative Richard Adams, who got 565.
In the Boniface wardLib Dems Nick Wayand John Downes defended their seats with 591 and 465 votes respectively.
Councillor Wright, defending his seat for the first time, said local issues had been key.
"We got out and talked to people about their concerns, and found that issues such as the proposal to charge for parking in Crediton and cuts to bus services are very much at the forefront of what they are worried about," he said.
Councillor Way, a district councillor since 1995, said he aimed to be a 365-day-a-year councillor.
"I try to be as accessible as possible and let people know what is going on," he said.
Councillor Downes said he had worked hard to secure his votes.
"It was a tremendously tough election but we seemed to be going against the national trend," he said. "We will do our best to continue to represent the residents of the Boniface ward."
